LR, MR & HR Truck Licence Training in Darwin
Choosing the right licence depends on the vehicle you intend to drive:
- Light Rigid (LR): Vehicles with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) above 4.5 tonnes and up to 8 tonnes.
- Medium Rigid (MR): Rigid vehicles with two axles and a GVM above 8 tonnes.
- Heavy Rigid (HR): Rigid vehicles with three or more axles and a GVM above 8 tonnes. HR also covers articulated buses.

Entry Requirements and License Holding Period
All candidates must hold their Current licence
Light Rigid (LR)
You must hold a current NT driver licence and have held a Class C licence for at least 12 months.
Medium Rigid (MR)
You must hold a current NT driver licence and have held a Class C or Light Rigid (LR) licence for at least one year (12 months).
Heavy Rigid (HR)
You must hold a current NT driver licence and have held either:
- a Class C licence for at least two years (24 Months), or
- an LR or MR licence for at least one year (12 Months).
Licence History & Training Support
Class C learner-licence time does not count towards the qualifying licence-holding periods. Contact the Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) if you are unsure how your licence history affects your eligibility.

Theory, Eyesight & Medical Requirements
You must meet the theory and practical assessment requirements for your chosen licence class.
MR applicants must pass an eyesight test. HR applicants must also pass one unless they have already passed an eyesight test for an MR licence.
If you have a medical condition that could affect safe driving, you must have your fitness to drive assessed by a health professional.
Transmission Restrictions

- XU: Automatic vehicles only.
- B: Automatic and synchromesh vehicles.
- Constant-mesh assessment: Can provide an HR licence without a transmission restriction.
